Can I join, and what is required?

Yes, The most important thing you will need to join VCSAR is DEDICATION and TIME. There will be a considerable amount of time needed for our training programs. There are training sessions each month as well as specialized training requirements for the different areas of Search and Rescue. Most of the training is provided by VCSAR locally but there will be on occasion, training in other parts of the United States.

Do I need to have any special background to join VCSAR?

The members of VCSAR come from a wide variety of backgrounds. If you are comfortable outdoors, physically fit for a 6-10 mile hike, capable of performing tasks in stressful situations, be able to maintain confidentiality of the details of our missions, and have a commitment to being part of a highly skilled professional team there's no problem. You will be required to maintain some certifications such as CPR, First Aid, etc.

Will I be called out on every search?

NO. Members are activated in phases and to what type of search is being conducted. We will place all members on standby when we have a active mission. We then activate the members as needed and give them instructions on where to report for duty. We also realize that members have career and family commitments as well and that they may not be able to participate for whatever reason. All that we ask is that you contact us if you are not able to participate.
